Dr. Dorcas E. McCoy is a tenured, Associate Professor of International Relations and Political Science at Bethune-Cookman University. Dr. McCoy earned a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Broadcast Journalism with a Minor in Spanish and a Master’s of Science in Political Science from Florida A & M University. She earned a Doctorate of Philosophy with concentrations in International Relations and Comparative Politics from Washington State University. Her favorite way to spend time is serving others and communicating good news. Her book, “Grace to Abound”, is a guide to servant leadership. She is a passionate and proven champion of student accessibility, affordability, and accountability For the past thirteen years, Dr. McCoy has served in numerous capacities at Bethune-Cookman University including: Chief Academic Officer, SACS Liaison, and Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs; Dean of the School of Social Sciences, Director of Model UN; and President of the Faculty Association.
Dr. McCoy has prepared and sponsored B-CU students to present research and United Nations simulations in various outlets including Washington, DC, Louisiana, Chicago and at various institutions throughout Florida. Additionally, she has collaborated with community groups to help students, faculty, and staff study abroad in Hong Kong, China, Mexico, Dominican Republic and Austria. Through her creative teaching pedagogy and grant partnerships, she has afforded students opportunities to participate in lectures and to connect with counterparts in various parts of the world, including South Africa, Mexico and Germany.
Dr. McCoy has authored grants and publications in the areas of Foreign Policy Decision-Making, Globalizing Academic Curriculums, and Retention. She has published in nationally acclaimed, peer-reviewed journals such as the Political Chronicle and World Affairs. She maintains professional membership in Pi Sigma Alpha National Political Science Honor Society, UNA-USA, Sister Cities International, NAACP, and the International Society of Political Psychology.
Dr. McCoy is the recipient of numerous honors, including the Massey Excellence in Teaching Award, Faculty Member of the Year Award and the Professor of Excellence Award. She is an accomplished administrator who has completed prestigious leadership institutes including the HERS (Higher Education Resource Services) Institute (http://youtu.be/6G5bD8ktjzY); the ACE (American Council on Education) National Leadership Forum for Women Administrators; and the Executive Leadership Summit at Hampton University.
